Willard is a growing, vibrant community located six miles northwest of Springfield on US Highway 160.
The 2000 Census indicated a population of 3,193. An internal census conducted in 2004 revealed a population of approximately 4,300, indicating that Willard is well on its way to another fast growing decade.
The local city government is composed of an elected Mayor and six Aldermen. The City Clerk, Chief Financial Officer, Chief of Police, Public Works Director, Director of Planning & Development, Director of Emergency Management, and Community Relations Officer are appointed by the Mayor with the consent of the Board of Alderman. The Board of Aldermen meets at the City Hall at 7:00 p.m. every 2nd and 4th Monday of the month. The City Hall office hours are 8:00 am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday.
One hundred seventeen businesses, including three shopping centers, serve folks from Willard and neighboring communities. In addition, there are three banks and professional medical services including three doctors, three dentists, two pharmacies, two chiropractors, and two veterinarians. The City has a 60-bed nursing home, a retirement village, and one assisted living facility.
One indicator of the life and vitality of a community is the participation and involvement of its residents.
Popular annual events include the Easter Egg Hunt, the day long 4th of July Celebration, the Frisco Highline Trail Run, SAFE Halloween, and the Emergency Preparedness AWARE fair.
In 1998 and each year thereafter, Willard has been designated “Tree City USA” by the National Arbor Day Foundation. In 2004, the City was also designated “Storm Ready” community by the National Weather Service.
The city of Willard provides sewer and water service. Several private companies offer trash collection services. Southwestern Bell provides telephone service, Empire Electric Company provides electric service, and Missouri Gas Energy provides natural gas service.
Willard is characterized by attractive residential neighborhoods and beautiful new subdivisions in various stages of planning and development. Friendly, service oriented businesses provide a wide range of services and products.
