Planning and Zoning Commission

This Commission was established by City Ordinance and consists of not more than fifteen (15) nor less than seven (7) members which include:
  • The Mayor
  • A member of the Board of Aldermen
  • All other members shall be residents of the City appointed by the Mayor with approval of the Board of Aldermen.
This Commission shall elect a Chair and a Secretary annually from among its membership. Meetings are scheduled for the fourth (4th) Tuesday of each month at 7:00 P.M.

Duties of the Commission include:
  • Conduct studies and recommend to the Board of Aldermen plans, goals and objectives relating to the growth, development and redevelopment of the City.
  • Prepare and recommend to the Board of Aldermen Policies, ordinances and administrative procedures and other means for carrying out plans for the City in a coordinated, efficient manner.
  • Prepare and recommend to the Board of Aldermen regulations governing the zoning and subdivision of land within the City including, but not limited to, requirements for the coordinated development of the City. Such recommendations may involve the coordination of streets within subdivisions, with other existing or planned streets or with other existing or planned streets or with other features of either the Comprehensive Plan or Official Map; for adequate open spaces for traffic, recreation, light and air; for distribution of population and traffic; for requirements as to the extent and manner of installation of all utility installations and recommended manner of enforcements.
  • Hold public hearings on rezoning applications, text amendments and conditional use permits and make recommendations to the Board of Aldermen.
  • Make recommendations regarding the approval or disapproval of plans and plats for land subdivision.
  • Hold public hearings and make recommendations regarding variances to land subdivision and platting.
  • Make reports to the Board of Aldermen on its investigations, transactions and recommendations.
